And since heraldry is an art form it has never limited itself to actual creatures but let its imagination ran riot into the truly fantastical. A ‘winged sea horse’, for instance, is made up of the front half of a horse with wings stuck on plus the back half of a large fish. Consider also a heraldic sealion: half rampant lion, half fish.
